what is a registered interior designer? what is the difference between a decorator and an interior designer?
Combining knowledge with aesthetic vision, interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are safe, functional, attractive and meet the needs of the people using the space.
While interior decorating is an important aspect of interior design, interior design encompasses a much greater scope of practice and professionalism. Interior decorating is the application of finishes, i.e., wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, etc. An interior designer is a professional who identifies, researches and creatively solves problems to interpret the function and quality of the interior environment. A designer is responsible for performing services relative to interior spaces, including programming, design analysis, space planning and aesthetics, using specialized knowledge of interior construction, building codes, equipment, materials and furnishings. Designers are formally trained to prepare drawings and documents relative to the design of interior spaces in order to enhance and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.
Professional interior designers have the education and experience necessary to oversee the complex tasks of designing and managing the construction of interior environments. Whether designing a private residence, commercial office, retail environment, recreation facility, or public institution, interior designers coordinate with other trades, suppliers, and licensed practitioners to ensure the safe, successful completion of a project.
In Canada, a professional interior designer has successfully completed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ, www.ncidq.org) exam and is actively involved in the field of interior design. In British Columbia, If they are professional members of IDIBC (www.idibc.org), such individuals may use the title Registered Interior Designer (R.I.D.).

design philosophy
My design philosophy stems from the powerful emotional response humans have to design in nature. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to be able to affect the quality of life of people by designing the built environment that surrounds them. The continued study of the principles and elements of design as they exist in nature serves not only as inspiration but as a benchmark of quality and attention to detail that I can only strive to achieve.
